Mood Board - September
My taste in music, fashion, and television change obnoxiously often BUT change is good! It keeps an open mind to new ideas and perspective. So about every month I will cultivate what I call a Mood Board where I tell you guys what has captivated my attention and style lately. So here you go!
Fashion -- My three must-haves for the beginning of the Autumn season are:
1. Jumpsuits/wide pants
2. Yellow
3. Loafers - anything from oxfords to flats
I'm heavily into menswear right now and these three essentials have caught my eye every time I'm shopping. I adore the classic Annie Hall look and I like to give it a more feminine twist with a pop of color, a properly fitted pant, and a pointed shoe.
Music:
As September unfolds and we push into October my taste in music takes a strange turn. Now normally I stick to my favorite Jazz music, Show-tunes, some Rolling Stones here and there but at the turn of Autumn all that is thrown out the window and the door opens for experimenting. Maybe because the seasons and holidays switch so quickly at the end of each year, from starting school to Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas and then New Year's just pops up out of nowhere from the dizzying array of celebrating, that music listening becomes a clump of spooky tunes and Christmas classics.
So! The songs I share with you all today have pretty much been on repeat in my car and at my desk for at least two weeks straight and they are the definition of mixing together all the emotions that the upcoming season will bring.
1. "Hard to Love" by Calvin Harris ft. Jessie Reyez (the music video is Jessie Reyez walking around Paris, so what's not to like?)
2. "Nancy Drew" by Slotface (interesting political light punk band I came across that really gives me that GRRRL power vibes)
3. "Hot Damn" by Ivy Levan (this woman has the MOST intriguing visual style I have ever seen, she is high fashion vintage aesthetic and has a gorgeous deep singing voice)
4. "Boogieman" by Childish Gambino (I love him, everybody should love him, 'nough said)
5. "Stuck on the Puzzle" by Alex Turner (this song is featured in the film Submarine and the singer Alex Turner fronts famous British band Arctic Monkeys)
These five songs go from sultry to pumped up to a little bit spooky and that explains some of my feelings for the upcoming Autumn time.
Television:
The unfortunate issue about television shows that I'm having is that I just don't have time to dedicate to a full television show right now. I'm the type of person that gets too attached and will binge the television show avoiding all other responsibilities (which I CANNOT do right now) and school is just too important at the moment. BUT don't worry I do have a couple shows that I've been watching right now, it's just not the usual ten or more shows at once.
1. Great British Bake Off -- I am OBSESSED with this show. There's a new season on right now except they changed so many of the hosts and judges because the show moved channels but I still love it just as much.
2. An Idiot Abroad -- This is a great show for a laugh, I couldn't count how many times I've laugh-cried to this show. It's a travel show but is it really?
3. Community -- This show is an easy watch, I just came from community college so it's very relate-able for me plus it's a Dan Harmon show and I do enjoy myself some Rick and Morty.
That ends the lists of things that have been front page in my media and fashion interests BUT I do have a few shout outs for activities I've been enjoying and some inspirational women.
Lately I've been teaching myself how to knit and bake (and yes that makes me sound about 65 years old but I LOVE IT) both of these things are relaxing and fun and produce something at the end and I feel productive doing them and would recommend them. So far I've only baked pumpkin cheesecake snicker doodles but they have been such a hit among my family and friends so I've been inspired to bake more. The hard part about knitting is that it takes a lot of practice so while I haven't produced a full scarf or doily I have been adamant about practicing so my knitting looks decent enough to make gifts.
Let's talk about movies. Yes I know Summer is the worst season for movies and being an avid movie goer... I haven't been to a theater in over a month ( I saw Dunkirk for Cillian Murphy but I have yet to admit if it was worth it or not.) Luckily for me there is a historic local theater in town that hosts old movies as well as independent movies and I finally for the first time ever went and saw Singin' in the Rain and I'm OVER the MOON about it! While it reminded me of White Christmas but without the Christmas part I still thoroughly enjoyed it as it's own and loved every second of it. So that saved what has been a not so good, very bad, ugly Summer of movie experiences.
ONE LAST THING BEFORE YOU GO: Speaking of movies... My It Girl shout out goes to Sofia Coppola. I love her movie Marie Antoinette and it inspires my photography and love of history almost every day. If you are like me and you think this movie is the bee's knee's then you should watch the Annie Leibovitz documentary Life Through a Lens because she did a gorgeous photo-shoot for Vogue magazine displaying the aesthetic from Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.
